Are my prices out of your range? I know what that’s like, but I still want to help you! Message me and let’s chat.

The goal of an editorial assessment is to get detailed feedback on what works in your manuscript, and what doesn’t. You want to make sure you’re building strong bones, that all needed scenes are there, the plot developments happen in the right order, that your pacing is good, and your characters are realistic and consistent. It can also include: plotting, pacing, character development, organization, scenes to cut down or expand, and the impact of the ending. Again, this feedback is given in the form of an editorial letter, with no in-text comments. Think of it like a detailed and constructive report on your book draft.
Price: $400 flat rate under 80,000 words*

Developmental edit is when an editor gives you the overall big picture evaluation of what your book needs to be ready for publishing. This manuscript critique addresses various story element issues like plot holes, poor character development, confusing dialogue, sentence phrasing, and any other issues that arise in relation to story elements. It may require you to make big changes in your manuscript, so it’s where we start in the editing process before we narrow in. My comments will focus on the overall plot, character development, world building, pacing, and more of the big structural things that can impact the shape of the book. (I call this the bones of your story. We want to make sure they are working and strong!)
Subsequent Development Pass
Every book should have a second pass from the same editor, especially if you’ve made substantial edits in the Big Picture Pass. This to see that the changes you’ve agreed to work in the story and haven’t caused new issues. It’s also another chance for the editor to dig in deeper to the manuscript. (I call this the muscle, because once the bones are good, you have to put it all back together.)

This is a line-by-line assessment of your work, asking questions about how the language itself is working, find conflicting or confusing phrasing and more. I tend to suggest fixes for errors and ask questions of specific lines, moments, scenes, interactions. Some things that could be asked or explored in the line edit:
-Is there a consistent point of view? If the POV shifts, does it do so in a logical, consistent manner?
-What is the tone of this passage? Do the words successfully evoke that tone?
-Are there any extraneous words or needless digressions?
-How do the sentences fit together? Do they flow naturally from one to the next?
-Is the language precise and free of clichés?
-Are there crutch words, phrases, actions or reactions that could be changed? (Using “just” 740 times, one character saying “well” at every dialogue line, etc.)
